Background

Located at the heart of its community, New Addington Leisure Centre serves as a vital hub for fitness and social activities. In addition to a gym, workout studio, four-court sports hall, and two heated swimming pools, the centre boasts the only large community hall in the borough. This hall is essential due to the redevelopment of the area, which led to the loss of the old community centre and ACA. Now a dual-purpose facility, the centre hosts events like indoor markets, Mencap meetings, and community bingo, further solidifying its role as a cornerstone of the community.

Challenges

The redevelopment aimed to enhance the facility’s sustainability while addressing high energy costs. Solar panels were identified as an effective solution to reduce the centre’s carbon footprint and long-term energy expenses.

Solution

Helix 50 installed a 41.82 kW solar panel system consisting of 102 panels and 2 inverters. The system was designed to maximize energy production while seamlessly integrating into the redevelopment project.

Results

• Cost Savings: Annual savings of £18,174, increasing by approximately £1,000 each year, with an estimated total of £892,477 over 25 years.

• Environmental Impact: The system produces 36,524 kWh annually, reducing carbon emissions by 17,155 kg per year.

• Community Benefit: The savings allow the centre to invest in further community-driven initiatives.
